DESCRIPTION:
In this course, the wide range of alternative energy options available for heating, cooling, transportation and power generation are presented. Renewable energy resources, such as solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, and biomass, are discussed in depth. Distributed generation systems, including fuel cells, photovoltaics, and mircroturbines, are analyzed from technical, economic, and environmental perspectives.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon completion of this course, the students will be able to:
1. List the operating temperatures of common types of fuel cells.
2. Estimate annual electricity production from a geothermal well.
3. Calculate daily thermal and electrical requirements for a solar house.
4. Calculate daily electrical energy output for a PV array.
5. Calculate windmill output given wind speed and blade diameter.
6. Estimate energy available from a tidal basin given relevant data.
TERM PAPER:
Each student will be required to prepare a term paper that analyzes the use of multiple alternative energy technologies that includes most of the technology covered in the course, examples are as follows: Wind Energy, Photovoltaic, Solar Thermal, Wave Energy (shore, off-shore, etc.), Tidal Energy, Geo Thermal, etc. Using the NYISO data, write an analysis for a plan that would implement the aforementioned technologies to offset the utility grid fossil fuel burning power plants in the next 25 years. Do the same for the next 50 years. This analysis should take into account the yearly energy consumption of New York State (from the NYS ISO website: [login to view URL], search for 2013 Load & Capacity Data or Gold Book) and properly offset the fuel burning power plants using renewable energy means. Include PROs & CONS of such an endeavor as well as a cost analysis with simple paybacks for each renewable technology used in your report.
The term paper must be typed with double-spacing, and include proper grammar & spelling, cover page, and table of contents (TOC). The length of the term paper shall not exceed 20 pages including at least four appropriately acknowledged references on the last page
