Coursework 1: Research Proposal
In this coursework, students are expected to propose a research topic, which is current and appropriate to
their course of study. They should, in the course of clearly describing the problem, demonstrate their
knowledge and creativity. The word count of the research proposal is required to be 300-500.
(1) Title (10 Marks)
The title must be concise and focused on a particular question related to business information systems. It
should identify a specialist academic discipline.
(2) Study Area Review (50 Marks)
This part will be extended to a literature review in CW2. It shows a systematic understanding of knowledge
at the forefront of the discipline. An example of study area review is given below: e.g. The importance and
relevance of protecting online information cannot be over emphasized. In the world today, businesses,
companies and organisations have increasingly migrated to the web in order to reach a wider range of
clients, customers and users. In most cases, these users are required to provide pieces of personal
information in order to be granted access or to obtain services from these vendors. These information
include; Name, Address, Contact and in some cases sensitive information such as financial information,
religious background etc. It becomes necessary therefore, that these information be kept secure and well
protected so as to maintain good relationship between a business and its esteemed users or customers.
(3) Aims and Objectives (20 Marks)
The aims and objectives of the research to demonstrate originality in the application of knowledge.
Furthermore, these aims and objectives must be achieved and concluded in the dissertation.
(4) Research Methodology (10 Marks)
The methodology to tacke the problem to achieve the aims and objectives. Students should also state how
the data will be collected and analysed. It should show an understanding of how applicable techniques are
used to create or interpret knowledge. For example: “By means of a Case Study, the topic would be
expanded and put in actual scenarios of previous occurrences and research findings (Saunders et al, 2007).
This would further be explained and evaluated by conducting a survey to obtain external views on the
subject. In order to achieve this, the following would be carried out…”.
(5) Deliverable, Project Type and Presentation (10 Marks)
Deliverables: Describe the output of this project. These must include the results, any artefact, or a detailed
investigation/analysis of a topic.
