I need a short story - or series of vignettes - written about a cast of characters' struggle to overcome sleep apnea Some info on this project: - the story must be written in form of series of emails to a friend, describing other friends' struggles and triumphs over a health condition called sleep apnea (along with other, related health conditions) - the emails will be sent out by me - can be written as an ongoing "soap opera", but must contain true elements - I am open to the story (or vignettes) being written on a piecemeal basis over a number of months (as opposed to being written all at once) - ideally, I'm looking for a writer who fits my audience profile: a middle-aged man or woman who has obstructive sleep apnea - purpose of the story/vignettes will be to educate reader about various types of medical treatments, while also entertaining the reader and holding their attention over a period of months - main characters will be my wife and I, but characters will also include sleep apnea survivors profiled in my book - antagonists in the story are greedy and uncaring doctors, and a healthcare industry that only cares about profits - plot must include: * characters struggling with, then overcoming, their sleep apnea, through various treatments * characters' struggle with these health conditions: insomnia, daytime fatigue, diabetes, high blood pressure - story must include open loops and cliffhanger at end of each email - story should use "hooks" and "pattern interrupts" to get reader's Attention - story should consist of 50-70 emails - I can provide you with background material on each of the characters Bidders MUST include these three pieces of information in their bids: (1) whether or not you personally fit the profile of my audience; (2) your knowledge of the topic (sleep apnea); and (3) your experience (if any) writing short stories or vignettes in email style

Hello, I am a native English speaker from the U.S. who is also familiar with Canadian spellings. i do not have sleep apnea, but my brother did. Two years ago, he died after a simple operation on his hand. My mother and I have had first-hand experience with the callous, uncaring medical establishment. Not only did they fail to take into consideration the risks posed by his sleep apnea on the recovery process, but they also failed to produce an autopsy as we requested. My mother is elderly, depressed, and sometimes was incoherent after this incident, so we did not pursue a lawsuit, since she was the primary witness to the promises made by the doctors before the surgery. I can do research to cover any gaps in my medical knowledge of obstructive sleep apnea. I have not written any pieces in email style, but I have written several pieces from a first-person perspective. Hello, I'm a very experienced writer and editor who has worked in games, comics, press, content, and more. I'm also a native English speaker and someone who has sleep apnea and I've been using a c-pap for about 6-7 years now, and honestly I don't know many people who have overcome it (other than with band-aid style treatments of the symptoms rather than the cause). I don't consider myself an expert on the subject, but I've been through sleep studies and have a cursory knowledge of how it works. More importantly, I think, is that I understand how it affects my life (and others), and it's one of the reasons I'm a freelance writer. I n general I wouldn't recommend hiring a freelancer by the hour, especially with segmented work like this which can easily be charged by the piece, or by word count. Let me address your concerns one at a time: 1) Do I fit into the profile of your audience? Yes and no. Why because i believe a writer is somewhat like a director in a movie - he can make a character do almost anything once he is able to equip the character with the personality that he has in mind. I may not have been a sleep apnea patient but I do have friends and cousins who suffer from it and I know first hand, the doubts, concerns and the doctors' attitudes to the ailment. 2) My knowledge of the topic? I had a Canadian buyer who I worked for over 2 years, and who was one of the most successful site owners of anything and everything to do with sleep disorders where sleep apnea held a pride of place. Since I was the sole writer in his team and his primary area of focus was sleep apnea, I have over 100 articles that I have written on the topic which are still there on the net. 3) my experience of writing short stories? I have the experience of writing an autobiographical e- book on Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) which is now available in Kindle format. Being an LPN working in a very busy internal medicine office we often find several patients with sleep apnea. There are no set boundaries as to who is affected with this problem. Diagnosis range from twenty to seventy or even eighty years old. Their stories are sometimes funny but sometimes they can bring you to tears with the heartache of having such a thing interrupt their life. With one novel published, I can bring your characters into life adding a bit of reality to creativity. It would be fun to not only have characters with the disorder but branch out into families, friends, relatives and even co-workers and how this condition touches their lives. Some would of course be sympathetic while others would maybe fall asleep as the patient tells his tale of woes to them, explaining everything down to the last nitty gritty detail. We could include the paperboy and the mailman also. The list is endless. Sleep apnea is a very serious thing but yet it can be overcome with a few tests and a C-pap machine. You know, the one that attacks you and sucks the air right out of your lungs at night. Or how about ...like I said, the possibilities are endless. I enjoy building characters slowly but don't like to put a lot of vivid descriptions of the characters themselves, therefore giving the reader a chance to put someone in that spot as he reads more of the details. It's amazing how readers can identify someone they know when they read the actions instead of the descriptions.

Because I am a prolific writer who also has sleep apnea I am the ideal candidate for this project. I have been familiar with sleep apnea for about ten years as my father has had it for ten years and I have struggled with it for eight years. It is much more debilitating than people think.

I am a male in my early forties, and although I do not myself suffer from sleep apnea, my wife does, and she uses a c-pap machine to help her sleep. I also happen to have several friends who also use c-pap machines for sleep apnea. In addition to my personal experiences, I am a paramedic, and among our protocols is the use of c-pap and bi-pap machines for extreme respiratory distress. I am by no means an expert, but my knowledge is sound, and my "day job" surrounds me with almost unlimited access to medical information whether in the form of books, the Web, or people a lot smarter than me. Although I've never published anything in epistilary form, it's always been a favored style of mine, and I've practiced it quite a bit. My favorite novel is Frankenstein, which is, of course, written as a series of letters. Thank you for your consideration!

Hi, I would like to start of by saying that no, I do not fit your profile of a middle aged man or woman but I do think that I am mature enough to write a story on this given topic. As for my knowledge in the area I do know that sleep apnea is a sleep disorder which is caused by difficulty of breathing. If the disorder goes untreated the person could stop breathing during sleep which deprives the brain and other areas of the body from oxygen. This disease can be a fatal one. I will do more research on this disorder and ensure i have all the information needed to write a good piece and educate the audience on this illness. This would be my first time writing a story in an email style format but I assure you I will do my very best and work hard to meet any given deadline. I hope you take my bid into consideration. I'd be a great choice as the writer for your project for the following reasons. 1) I'm a native English speaker, born in San Diego, CA, have been writing short stories since I was a child, and I have a degree in English/Writing from Humboldt State University. 2) I am your EXACT audience! I'm (a YOUNG) 51 years old, and I've had sleep apnea (off and on) since my 20s. 3) I went through an AMAZING journey with diagnosing and treating my sleep apnea, and have experienced MANY of the symptoms and co-morbidities that accompany the condition! I've personally MET some of the "villains" in your story, although my experience was more about their apathy and ignorance than actual greed or not caring. I do, however, know how to create GREAT antagonists, and to bring out depth of character in both the protagonists and villains. As far as writing in "email style", I have not done this in any professional capacity, but I've written over 100 blog postings and literally thousands of emails, and I LOVE the "email (or letter) style" of writing when done right, and I'd do a great job with that for you! One thought, even before the job, and this will give you an indication of how personal this topic is to me: have you considered doing it as a series of emails from the PATIENTS THEMSELVES? Writing it as emails "describing other friends' struggles and triumphs" can take away the PUNCH that sucks people in to personal stories. Thanks for your consideration! Brian

Yeah! It’s me again. Your APNEA buddy. I’ve got plenty to groan about today! I’m glad Frank left for the other bed last night, it has worked better than I expected. He gloated this morning that he hadn’t heard any loud snoring or choking coughs. It’s a harrowing guilt trip of course. ‘Yay!’ He shouted going out the door, ‘I don’t need any more ear plugs!’ He threw them in the outside rubbish bin with great gusto. We had to go to the specialist – again. Fiona’s rooms are very plain there is no window, just a slight hum from the air-conditioning unit and a flicker from the tube of neon lighting that ought to be replaced. Even the same fake planter box with bright green synthetic foliage is by the reception desk. The only saving grace is her garden magazines. I like the glossy pictures of disordered gardens. ‘I have exactly the same “look” down near the compost,’ I told Frank. But he harrumphed as usual and kept txting someone. Fiona, the Ear, Nose and Throat specialist, came out of an enamelled white door. Frank hesitated. Should he follow? I get agitated with his reluctant show of support. There are too many questions for me to answer especially with instruments poked up my nose. He will nod as if he’s understanding how painful the nose cauterising must be but he will skulk to the toilet regularly. Fiona asked him smiling, ‘How are the Blues doing this year Frank?’ She is youngish, maybe thirty, and has polished skin with angelic wisps of fair

I personally suffer from Insomnia, and have a mother who suffers from sleep apnea. We finally got her a mask after a long fight with out insurance agency, and we'll see how that helps her out. I know my mother was always irritable when I lived at home because she would never sleep properly due to the irregular breathing patterns she'd have at night. I know I am always the edge of nearly collapsing from a lack of sleep and being fully awake and well, and I can't make anyone understand why sleeping pills don't always help (because you build resistance to them). I am afraid to take prescription drugs like Ambien because a friend of my dad's took Ambien and sleep walked out to his car and drove it down the street into someone else's house. I have wrote a few stories email style before under ghost-writing contracts and my portfolio includes a story titled "Dear Imerich" that is written in letter format. I'd be happy to work with you on this and if there are any changes you want me to make with my initial pass at the stories, please do not hesitate to tell me.
