It’s always exciting when a classic technique comes full circle, hitting its stride for another round of popularity. That’s what’s happening with crochet. Crochet has always been in vogue for some of us, so why the timelessness of its interest? Could it be the fabulous yarns made available as time passes? Maybe it’s due to the constant waves of new generations of crafters poised and ready to embrace the fun, satisfaction, and relaxation the craft has to offer. It was because of this awareness that this company was born. It started operations in 2013, with the main mission of enhancing its social relevance and enlist the employment of crochet makers in the province of Tarlac, Philippines. Tarlac is a city known for its corn produce. The whole year, these corn farmers depend on their livelihood in planting and harvesting corns. However, it was discovered that these corn farmers do have a special skill: crocheting. We took this benefit of improving their lives by offering their design in the local market. Small communities are represented by group leaders that serve as the purchaser for their area. (At present, we have 5 group leaders). These group leaders then receive orders from us and distribute its production to different families (on the average 50 families per group leader). During lean months, these poor farmers, including their whole family, do crocheting and this in hand helps them generate additional income. Because of our orders, these farmers are not left idle; they earn income in the otherwise lean days waiting for their harvest period. We have given them the hope to live each day knowing that they are blessed with work and that they are given the opportunity to earn. Each member of the family has been contributing to the production of crochet items. From the elders to the children, they all participate in crocheting. Based on a survey they held, the following shows the specific task they perform. Age Bracket Item Time Frame 8 – 12 Coin Purse, Cell Case 7 pcs/day 13 – 30 Hair Accessories 8 pcs/day 30 – above Apparel 1 pc in 2 days Young ones as early as 8 yrs. old make these items when they get home from school. Instead of loitering around, they look forward to finishing as many items as possible. Most mothers are grateful that their children are interested in crocheting, something that requires time and perseverance. This enhances their skills and inspires them to learn more. Their earnings serve as additional funds for their educational needs. Young adults, mostly out-of-school teens, are also given the opportunity to earn instead of wasting their time on unimportant things. Because of financial constraints, these kids, as much as they want to continue their education, are hindered to go to school. So, instead of being idle, they do most of the crocheting. Majority of the corn farmers are the elderly. These are mothers, grandmothers, and aunts that depend on their income on their husbands or whatever small contribution they can do in farming. When they learned of our orders, they were so much delighted. Their faces smiled, their feeling of uselessness disappeared and their hope for a better life was awakened. These elderly people put most of their time in crocheting apparel items. It takes days for one apparel to be finished. The skills of these elderly have contributed in the designs and styles of every apparel they make. Through their own sweat and efforts, they feel uplifted whenever they finish an item. It gives them so much joy and assurance. They started becoming confident that even in lean months; they know that they can survive each day because of the consistency of production from us.
