Accessing C application from VB

We have a c application (incl source code) with defined I/O capabilities. These need to be accessed from a vb application, and the output parsed into an appropriate format. The application is a chess program (written in c). It is reasoably advanced, but also very neatly written. It has very little regard for I/O interaction (written originaly to be presented through a dos window). We need full control over the c - application, and need to have first level interpretation of the outcome. The outcome is fairly variable based on the state the program is in. We can see currently 2 options: 1) Interact with the application via hidden dos mode (code the dos linking can be provided (link to vb!) 2) encapsulate the application and turn it into a dll with defined I/O and state management (prefered). As part of the project, transformation of a coordinate system to pgn and pgn to coordinate system is required. (pgn = Nxd2 -> b1d2= coordinates) and (b1d2 = Nxd2). This project is not for C beginners or VB beginners. We are not looking for interface building. Thank you for concidering the bid.
