C Programming - Hash tables & Hash functions

In this program is to try to improve performance of a program by changing out the original data structure (AVL Tree) with some hash tables. This particular program will be to make the best performance update given a few rules:

• The original implementation will be give to you which creates an AVL tree from a large dictionary containing some 225000 words. Then the program does a large number of lookups and times them. This basic structure of a hash table is not allowed to change. What is allowed to change in the underlying data structure that you use to implement your hash table (while conforming to the interface).

• You will need to manage to create any kind of speedup in your program compared to the AVL tree. However, you must ensure that the amount of work that is done in both versions are the same - i.e., no cheating. The faster your program runs for the same amount of work (lookups), the more bonus points you will get on this assignment.

## Deliverables

1) Complete and fully-functional working program(s) in executable form as well as complete source code of all work done.

2) Deliverables must be in ready-to-run condition, as follows (depending on the nature of the deliverables):

a) For web sites or other server-side deliverables intended to only ever exist in one place in the Buyer's environment--Deliverables must be installed by the Seller in ready-to-run condition in the Buyer's environment.

b) For all others including desktop software or software the buyer intends to distribute: A software installation package that will install the software in ready-to-run condition on the platform(s) specified in this bid request.

3) All deliverables will be considered "work made for hire" under U.S. Copyright law. Buyer will receive exclusive and complete copyrights to all work purchased. (No GPL, GNU, 3rd party components, etc. unless all copyright ramifications are explained AND AGREED TO by the buyer on the site per the coder's Seller Legal Agreement).

## Platform

I connect to a linux box with my Windows XP PC, in otherwords my program will need to compile on linux.
