**Learning Outcomes** Having Completed this assignment successfully you will be able:

a) To demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the links between CAD and CAM;

b) To formulate the manufacturing process plan for the 2D milling & the turning parts provided;

c) To use a suitable CAD/CAM system (I-Deas) to generate the part NC machining program and simulate its machining processes;

To verify the machining processes and modify machining parameters

**SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS**

Please note: This is a milling & turning group assignment.

Use Solid Edge to produce 3D models from draft files and import into I-deas.

Use I-deas Generative Machining to produce NC part programs. (CL files & postprocess)

1. Manufacturing process plan of the chosen part.

2. Feed & speed calculations for one of the milling cutters used, including a brief discussion on the rationale of tool selection (Material, size, type etc).

3. Description of workholding strategy (milling only)

## Deliverables

_NOTES FOR CAD/CAM NC MACHINING ASSIGNMENT 1__ARRANGEMENT_

Students will notionally be working in groups of six.

There are six components to be modelled and machined, ie. three milling and three turning and each group member is required to complete only one of these. The mutual support within the group should therefore enhance the learning experience, but care should be taken to ensure an equality of effort from each group member.

If the group size is less than six, the division between milling and turning must be as equal as possible.

eg. a group of three would complete say two turning and one milling but not three turning or milling.

_FILES_

Six Solid Edge draft (*.dft) files from which the 3D models will be produced will be available on Studynet/Teaching Resources. Copy and for convenience print them.

_CAD TO CAM_

On completion of the solid Edge modelling element, the file should be saved as a SE part file and then as a STEP (STandard for the exchange of Product Model Data) file and imported into I-DEAS.

_How To: _

In SE ??" File/Save As and from the drop down menu select STEP documents.

In I-deas ??" File/Import and from the Import Selections form select STEP.

_I-DEAS GENERATIVE MACHINING_

Sufficient knowledge will be gained from the tutorials, practices and demonstrations to enable the successful completion of this assignment.

As part of the process, I-deas compiles what is effectively a manufacturing process plan and this will need to be displayed.

_FEED AND SPEED CALCULATIONS_

For turning:

Cutting speeds, Vc are quoted in M/min and feeds, Fn, in mm/rev .

The values of Vc and Fn can be found in any tool vendors catalogue or suitable Web site for specified materials.

To calculate spindle speed : rpm= _Vc*1000_ if dia is expressed in mm

Pi*dia of billet

For milling:

Vc is quoted in M/min and Fn is load/tooth

To calculate spindle speed: rpm = _Vc*1000_ if cutter dia is expressed in mm

Pi*dia of cutter

Feedrate = rpm*Fn*Tn where Tn = number of teeth.

Cutter selection will be covered as part of the demonstrations.

**_WORKHOLDING STRATEGY FOR MILLING_**

Simple representations can be used for workholding fixtures or jigs. For example, two rectangular blocks suitably placed can represent the jaws of a vice. _Do not spend time producing highly detailed models of fixtures!_

This is the only description required and can be modelled in Solid Edge. There is no need to build an assembly, just model the parts and position them.

The manufacturing process plan, feed and speed calculations and milling fixtures can be displayed in a Word document.

There is no requirement for any other written work for this assignment.
