Students are expected to view one (1) of the following films

American History X

 Monster

 Requiem for a Dream

 Sleepers

Wall Street (Not Money Never Sleeps!)

Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer

American Psycho

Based upon the information from the textbook, class lectures, and three other credible sources students should (A) consider which crime theories best explain the deviance and criminal activities as depicted in the selected film, (B) determine how the Criminal Justice System and the community could have intervened to prevent the crime(s) and (C) assess how realistic the depiction of the crime in the film was.

(A) Students should consider at least three different crime theories in the exploration of the story. Students may select any theories presented in the course materials. A good paper will use specific details from the film (including names of the characters, descriptions of scenes, specific dialogue, etc.) to support its premise. Students should give actual examples from the story line to illustrate their reasoning in choosing a theory. Students should use careful logic and analysis in applying supporting evidence from the movie to your selected theories. While viewing the movie, students should consider the following (non-exhaustive list) when deciding on the theories that apply:

1. How the main character(s) became involved in criminal/deviant behavior?

2. Is the behavior the product of learning, operant conditioning, lack of containment or failure of self-control?

3. Is there a psychiatric explanation for the behavior?

4. What is the significance of personality traits and their role in the behavior?

5. Did the behavior result from failure to attain socially endorsed goals?

6. Do the concepts of social bonds apply?

7. Did labeling play a role?

8. What social factors both process and structure apply?

9. Is there a bio-chemical or biosocial explanation for the behavior?

10. Have you considered all the theories discussed?!

(B) Students should consider criminal justice system interventions/policies that would have prevented or reduced future criminal acts depicted in the film. Students should consider macro-level interventions that would have impacted the individuals. Students should consider the following questions (non-exhaustive list):

1. What individual, familial, and ecological factors contributed to the individuals perpetrating in the film?

2. What if implemented, could have decreased these factors and the chance of the individual perpetrating the crime?

3. What, if implemented, could have prevented similar individuals in similar situations from perpetrating the crime?

(C) Students should assess, based on current research, if the criminal behaviors and ecological factors depicted in film are typical of real life crime. Students should consider the following questions (non-exhaustive list):

 1. Are the motives realistic?

 2. Are the demographic variables related to the perpetrator accurate?

 3. Are the demographic variables related to the perpetrated crime accurate?

Format: Type-written assignments should be single-spaced, have 12 point font, and have one-inch margins. Length is based on content; there is not a page minimum. It will be graded on the quality of the content (it must include a thorough examination of at least three criminological theories and their application to the selected movie, an analysis about how the criminality in the movie could have been avoided on a micro and macro level, and an analysis of how accurately the crime is depicted in the film.) APA citations are required.

Grading Criteria: Please review the Rubric. Failure to follow instructions can result in point deductions.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to prove to the professor that students are competent in applying neo-classical, biological, psychological and sociological theories to criminal behaviors. Furthermore, students can demonstrate their ability to analyze criminal behavior in the real world and the potential prevention of such behaviors. It is an assignment where students can demonstrate skills at writing coherently and communicating ideas.

Audience: The audience of this paper is the professor. Assume that he/she is un-informed, an outsider to criminology and a person who has not viewed any of the films. He/she is also not psychic (!), students need to make sure their answers are self-explanatory and do not require additional clarification.
