Assignment 1: Implications of Leadership and Ethics on Organizational Behaviour This assignment, worth 100 marks, will comprise 15 per cent of your total course mark. Submit your completed assignment to your Open Learning faculty member by the end of Week 4 of the course. Instructions Write a paper that captures and demonstrates your understanding of the key concepts learned in this course. Weave in your readings, experiences and examples to support your discussion. Your paper should follow the instructions below, which help you to divide your work into four sections: Leadership, Heroic Management vs. Engaged Leadership, Organizational Ethics and a Summary. The answers to all of the questions below should add up to 8–10 pages. Leadership (25 marks) Discuss your strengths and weaknesses related to your personal leadership effectiveness. Discuss the elements of your development plan to leverage your strengths and develop your weaknesses. Examine the opportunities and barriers for implementation. What might get in the way of success? Discuss your values and how they shape your leadership behaviours. Heroic Management vs. Engaged Leadership (25 marks) Reflecting on Beyond Selfishness by Henry Mintzberg, et al, discuss the idea of the heroic manager vs. the engaged manager. What is the dominant or prevailing leadership style in your organization? Discuss the impact on employee morale and performance. What does your organization need to do to be considered a leader in ethical business practises? Organizational Ethics (25 marks) The Corporation provides a stark analysis of corporate behaviour. Contrast your current organization in relation to those presented in the movie. Examine your organization's Code of Ethics; compare and contrast them to daily operational behaviours. How are the code of ethics upheld or challenged? How do the stated ethics drive behaviours throughout the organization? What is common practise but violates the code of ethics and yet remains unchallenged? What are the implications for your organization should it not behave in an ethical manner? What are the challenges to shift or enhance organizational social responsibility? Having completed the Code of Ethics survey ( [login to view URL]), summarize the results between you and your colleagues. Discuss the implications from an organizational leadership perspective. What are the implications for you and your role in the organization today and in the future? Summary (25 marks) From your personal development plan and surveys, summarize your key lessons learned so far and how you will apply them in the future. What personal challenges do you anticipate and how do you plan to overcome them? What organisational barriers do you anticipate as you influence the organization towards more corporate socially responsible behaviour? Ensure that you make the appropriate references to the readings as you link the theory to your practice.
