Mount Isa Mines (MIM) is one of the oldest and deepest mines in Australia. Mount Isa Copper Operations (MICO) consists of ~500km of open drives. Due to the age of the mine surface support was not routinely installed for a large percentage of the drives. Although rehabilitation activities have reduced this percentage, there remain many tens of kilometres of drive that have no surface support. These drives are near stopes and ore-passes many of which are no longer accessible and which pre-date modern 3D mine plans and scanning technologies.
During the second half of 2014 and the first half of 2015, there were a series of rock-related near-hit incidents that had the potential to cause severe harm or death. These incidents triggered a series of internal investigations, focused on understanding and then reducing the rockfall risk.
The result of these investigations was the creation of a series of interlinked systems. While each component is deliberately simple, the interlinked system is comprehensive and robust.
We believe that the interlinked systems and practices that manage access control are innovative and effective risk reduction strategy. This strategy while developed at MICO could be adapted and utilised on other mine sites.
