I had done a very similar project to control WS2812 led with esp8266. My proposal and also recommend that you switch to esp8266 and ws2812. With esp8266, it has wifi capability and you will be able to control it via the Rest API. Currently, my code have some effects such as Fade In Fade Out, Rainbow Cycle, Gradient, etc. and you can adjust the speed of the animation as well as adjusting the brightness. My project do not have any hard button and control is currently made via rest api. User can create a html/javascript application or android app to control the leds. Firstly, what do you mean by 'Maximum yield of channels'? Do you mean that you have a maximum number of LEDs in a single string? How many slave arduino devices do you plan to attach to the master? Do you have a value for the most blue color that you can set to? Do you have preferred pin numbers for the inter-arduino communication and/or the LED data line?
