Dear Sir, FreeBSD has quite tight in security so I assume you might even more expertise than I am so I will keep it short. I am experienced in Linux and having good knowledge, regarding domain administration, my proposal is as following. Scope: - Install mail service - Config ACL / whitelist - Alter MX record - Link user database / list Prerequisite: - SSH access for a fresh install freebsd server with root access. Let me know if public key is needed. - User database information e.g. LDAP or flat file Post set up test: - Email testing - The email should be able to send via a mail client on your choice. - Soft restart - Restart the server, the service should be brought up properly after restart. Could I ask about email backup server requirement? - Is this a backup server for data or a redundant server for your main server? - If it is a redundant server, will it be in active-active or active-standby topology? - Do you estimate the scale of your email system? - Where does backup server locate? First step is to evaluate the configuration files for the servers and document all network requirements (ports, routing, load balancing, dns records, etc..) To create a backup email server I would suggest creating Docker containers (or similar) which mimic your active mail servers. Once this has been completed, we are able to run tests on the container in a sand-boxed environment to ensure it will work in given scenarios and extreme cases. Future administrators may simply run a script to setup a backup mail server. Next is the synchronization script. We will use the cronjob scheduling service to initiate a data sync between your backup server and primary server(s) at a given interval of time. A web service will be provided with a very simple administration panel to view the status of current and previous synchronizations, "force sync", "hard resync" and server uptime status. The same web service may be used and extended by your applications to create further reporting or command pipelines. It will be operated on a standard JSON API and produce a JSON response. Finally I will simply create a simulated network and test failure scenarios on the completed system to demonstrate it is working properly.

Have experience with different mail server installations based on Postfix as MTA, one of POP3/IMAP (Courier, Dovecot, Cyrus) and other components like clamav, postgrey, etc. I am not worked with amavis, but I am not think, that this will be a problem. First of all, I need to ask you: What kind of backup email server you want? - This can be backup MX server, which give an opportunity not to loose messages while primary is down. It not hold all messages and not provide POP3/IMAP services. - This can be cold backup server, it not shown as email server in internet. Data periodically syncing from main server. When primary server fails, cold backup can be used after making some config and DNS changes. Are you satisfied with how your primary server works? As you noted your primary server is VM. In your own virtual infrastructure or at some provider? Where you planning to host backup server? I need to understand aim which you are want to reach by this backup server.
