Product positioning is the process marketers use to determine how best to communicate their product's attributes to their target customers based on customer needs, competitive pressure available communication channels and carefully crafted key messages (Richards). Effective product positioning ensure that marketing message resonate with target consumers and compel them to take action.
Product positioning helps marketers consider how their offerings are different from others that consumers have to choose from. It is not enough to know this from an internal perspective –marketers must communicate this to target audience. To do this effectively we must choose communication channels that designed to connect with their identified target audiences at times when they will be receptive to these messages.
Advertisers have to come up with inventive ways to get viewers’ attention, other than simply launching another round of expensive commercials –product placement is one such way. However political candidates can’t do this, but they have been appearing more frequently on ate night talk shows or at the coin toss of a high profile football game or they team with TV networks, –MTV “choose or lose” campaign, and social networking site like Myspace to present the “MTV Myspace Candidate Dialogue”, which featured video clips of several presidential contestants fielding questions for young voters (Johnson, nd).
Effective product positioning is conveying the differentiating, value-added aspects of your product or service to your target audience through the communication channels you have selected. These messages are designed to convey how your product is different (and better) than competitive offerings, as well as to address the value-added attributes that are important to your audience (Reign, nd). Product positioning is at the foundation of any effective marketing plan because it impacts the ultimate purchase decision.
