Your job is to write a 4 page argumentative essay in MLA style format based on three plays; Aeschylus’s Agamemnon, Sophocles’s Oedipus the King, and Shakespeare’s King Lear. There is a list of topics below; choose one.

1. Discuss the themes of knowledge and wisdom in Agamemnon and Oedipus the King in relation to factual knowledge (“reality”), knowledge of the past and the future, and self-knowledge.

2. Discuss the role of oracles and prophecies in Agamemnon and Oedipus the King and their relation to the central themes of the plays.

3. In Agamemnon, animal imagery is used during the uttering of prophesies and omens or the recounting of key events from the past, while in Oedipus the King these tropes take up more ambiguous meanings. What is the significance of animal figures in Aeschylus’s and Sophocles’s plays? Why are they used and how do they contribute to our response to the central themes of the play?

4. Discuss Agamemnon and Oedipus the King as plays addressing political questions about the Polis, the Law, and the State.

5. Discuss Agamemnon and Oedipus the King as plays dramatizing the undoing of “authority” figures. Consider carefully the different structures of the plays and the dramatic function of each king in relation to his position in society (presence/absence, memory/forgetting), his power and control on the polity, and hauntings from real or imagined dangers.

6. How are male and female characters represented in the two plays? Consider carefully the language used by the dramatist to describe them as well as the language used by the characters as the plot unfolds. What attributes and perceptions are associated with masculinity and femininity? What does this representation say about Greek values about gender and sex?

9. Both Agamemnon and Oedipus the King are based on family plots. Discuss the representation of the family and blood lineage in the plays. Why is this notion so important in ancient Greek society? Why do fifth century dramatists take it as the basis for their tragedies?
