Choose one of the following topics and write an essay of 3,500-4,000 words.

1. Identity and Food: Discuss the connection between food and identity using relevant theory (e.g. Anderson, Slocum, etc.), and analyse how Clara Sereni’s autobiographical book, Casalinghitudine, uses food in order to construct the protagonist’s complex and multiform identity (as daughter, mother, activist, working woman, Jewish-Italian, etc.). Compare this to the use of food in the construction of Scego’s identity in the short story ‘Salsicce.’ In your response make sure to refer to examples from Sereni’s novel (beyond those discussed in class) and to draw on pertinent theory, criticism and/or socio-historical studies.
2. Meals, Structure and Genre: What are the historical origins of the Italian meal structure (i.e. different courses etc.) and how does Clara Sereni’s Casalinghtudine reflect and/or undermine these typical structures? Make sure to consider also Casalinghitudine’s relationship to the recipe book. In your answer, use examples from Sereni’s novel (beyond those discussed in class) and employ relevant theory, criticism and/or socio-historical studies (e.g. Montanari, Counihan etc.).
3. Food and the Family. Analyze the relationship between the family, food, the rituals of eating around the communal table in Italian society, and how these family culinary rituals are portrayed in Clara Sereni’s Casalinghitudine. Refer to examples from the text (beyond those discussed in class), as well as to pertinent theory, criticism or socio-historical studies in your analysis.
4. Anorexia and Autonomy? Examine the question of eating disorders and their portrayal in Clara Sereni’s Casalinghitudine. In your response, make sure to refer to examples from Sereni’s novel (beyond those discussed in class) and to draw on pertinent theory (e.g. Brumberg, Bordo etc.), criticism or socio-historical studies.
5. Food, Gender Roles and Domesticity. Critically assess the role of gender and food in the Italian socio-historical context (e.g. Capatti & Montanari, etc.) and examine how Clara Sereni’s novel Casalinghitudine addresses the question of gender and domestic labour in relation to food. In your answer make sure to employ examples from Sereni’s novel (beyond those discussed in class) and to draw on pertinent theory, criticism or socio-historical studies.
