Textbook Services: Penn State is concerned about the rising cost of textbooks and the number of students who cannot afford them, and thus, do not purchase the required textbooks for their classes. Penn State has decided to look into alternate methods of providing textbooks. They know almost nothing about the other options or about costs or facilitation. They do know that simply making copies of textbook chapters may violate copyright law and is not an option.
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM:
The rising cost of textbooks and the number of students who cannot afford them.
PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF THE WORK:
The purpose of this study is to find alternate ways to deliver information to students without using a hard copy textbook.
SOURCES AND DATA COLLECTION METHODS:
I want to find out the average cost of textbooks and the number of students either not buying them at all or just buy which ones are the cheapest. My data collection will start by researching the cost of current textbooks and evaluating the difference between other methods of the information. I will research examples such as online textbooks, PDFs, and class handouts.
PRELIMINARY OUTLINE:
The preliminary outline for this study is as follows:
I. What is the average cost of a textbook?
a. How does this compare amongst majors?
b. How much is student for the semester?
II. Sample survey for affording the textbooks
a. Collect data of how many students buy the recommended textbooks
b. Collect data of how many students choose a later edition or cheaper option
c. Percentage of students who don’t buy the textbooks at all
III. Finding alternative ways to give out information
a. Comparing the price of an online book to a hard copy
b. Audio clips of the book that can be uploaded to Canvas
c. Researching if textbook costs could be budgeted into the price of tuition and provided by the school
IV. Suggesting alternative ways to give out information to professors
a. Collect data of how many professors would be willing to change from hardcopy
b. See which alternative method a professor would suggest using
c. Discuss if professors think not using hardcopy is something they would be willing to do.
