Below are a few comments on what is involved in writing your final paper. In addition, you should review the previously posted materials on Tips on Writing Argumentative Essays, and Creating an Outline.

Substance - In drawing up your outline, you should have already done a significant amount of the work relating to the substance of your essay. In developing your final paper should review the feedback that you received on your outline. On the basis of this feedback you should revise your outline. This will probably require you to do a little more reading to strengthen those sections of your outline which were found to be weak. In developing the substance of your argument you should keep in mind the purpose of the assignment and the criteria for evaluation.

Organization - There are four different levels of organization which need to be addressed when writing your paper:

a) Sentence Level - Sentences should express single thoughts. Short, simple sentences are easier for your reader to follow than long, convoluted ones.

b) Paragraph Level - Paragraphs should investigate a single topic and examine it in a logical manner. They should normally begin with an introductory sentence that indicates to your readers what the paragraph is about. They should normally conclude with a connecting sentence which indicates to readers where you will go next.

c) Section Level - Your paragraphs should be ordered so that they develop logical, coherent and cogent arguments. Generally, in a section you will develop more than one argument or one complex argument with different components. (In some instances it may be advisable to use subsections.) Typically in a section you will compare and contrast different arguments and, ultimately, come up with your own conclusion. Each section should begin with a brief statement of what will be argued.

d) Overall Organization - The different sections of your paper need to follow logically from each other. I have previously stated that this paper should probably be organized into three main sections, each one addressing one of the three forms of analysis you will be employing (viz., positive, normative and strategic). Introductions and conclusions play an important role in helping your readers to understand how the different sections are related. A good introduction will help your reader anticipate how your argument is to unfold and more easily comprehend the argument. A good conclusion provides a brief summation of your main

thesis (theses) and indicates the significance of your argument including relevant implications.

Style - You are to use the American Psychological Association (APA) guidelines. The authoritative source is the APA Publication Manual. The following website may be an easier way to access the basics of the APA guidelines:

Format - In accordance with the APA guidelines, the paper is to be double spaced with one inch margins. Acceptable typeface include Courier or Times New Roman in 12-point size. For additional points on formatting, please see the APA guidelines. You do not need to add an abstract to your paper (you only need a strong introduction). You do need to put in page numbers when you cite scholarly works in your paper.

Length - The final paper should be 12 - 15 pages in length.

Grading - The final paper is worth 25% of your total course grade. The basic criteria for evaluation are the following:

1) integration of all three forms of analysis (viz., positive, normative, strategic) 2) drawing upon theories (normative, positive) 3) investigation employing different levels of analysis (interpersonal, institutional, structural, national, regional, international, etc.) 4) investigation which identifies different (potential) lines of social fissure (e.g., ethnicity, religion, race, class, gender, sexual orientation, age, etc.) 5) demonstrating an appreciation (and refutation) of opposing views

In addition to these criteria, points may be deducted if the proper format is not used, there are excessive grammatical errors, inadequate attention has been paid to organization, the paper is inordinately short (or long), etc.

Due Date – March 23rd, 2010 (in lecture). Papers submitted late will be assessed a late penalty of 1 point (out of 25) per day. No papers will be accepted after Monday April 5th, 2010.

Submission of Papers – All final papers need to be submitted in hard copy (in class) and through “turnitin” (see the moodle site for details). If your paper is late, the date that you submit it to turnitin will count as the date of submission.

Term Paper – Topics

Foundations of Business and Society

SOSC 2340.09 – 2009-2010

1) Should workers have rights to participate in the control (and profits) of firms?

2) What constitutes “fair compensation” for CEOs and senior executives of large corporations? How can greater fairness be ensured in practice? Should it be linked to company performance and how is this to be measured (e.g., productivity increases, sales, employment generated, etc.)?

3) Should private corporations be allowed to patent life forms or parts thereof (viz., animals, crops, bacteria, genes)?

4) Do large corporations operating in developing countries have obligations (beyond respecting existing laws) to ensure that their sub-contractors abide by fair labour and environmental standards and respect basic human rights? If so, how can they best be encouraged to live up to these obligations?

5) Should trade agreements (e.g., NAFTA, the WTO) be required to have provisions for minimum labour and environmental standards (which are enforceable through the court system)?

6) Should corporations be banned from lobbying governments? Why or why not? If not, what restrictions should be placed upon corporate lobbying practices?

7) Should governments give special preference to social economy enterprises (social entrepreneurs, cooperatives, social purpose businesses, etc.) to encourage more socially and environmentally sustainable production? Why or why not? If yes, what type of measures should they take?

The Proposal:

Annotated Bibliography: You are to pick one of the paper topics and compile an annotated bibliography. The bibliography is to contain at least 6 citations from scholarly works, i.e., articles from academic journals or scholarly books (you may use articles from refereed e-journals, but not just any article that you find on the web). The articles are to be related to the topic you have selected. Please

see the Cornell Library website ([url removed, login to view]) for more information on what an annotated bibliography is.

Writing a Thesis Statement: The purpose of a thesis statement is to inform your readers what you will be arguing in your paper. As you will be developing a complex argument using different forms of analysis (positive, normative and strategic), this should be reflected in your thesis statement. You may want to consult the following site to review how to write a thesis statement ([url removed, login to view]).

Drafting an Outline: The basic purpose of making an outline is to assist you in developing more cogent arguments and a more logically-order paper. To familiarize yourself (or refresh your memory) about what an outline is you might want to consult some on-line resources such as the sites at Purdue University on Developing an Outline ([url removed, login to view] )

In developing an outline you should keep in mind the following points:

a) developing an outline involves reading (and taking reading notes), identifying the key issues involved, identifying competing arguments concerning the key issues and organizing the individual issues and arguments so that they make a compelling case that supports your thesis;

b) you are writing a paper that involves elaborating a series of arguments (not a single argument);

c) you need to incorporate different types of analysis in your paper (viz., positive, normative and strategic).

In order to develop an appropriate outline for this paper, it is strongly recommended that students:

a) divide their paper into three sections corresponding to the three forms of analysis (viz., positive, normative and strategic);

b) develop a thesis statement to guide what will be argued with respect to each of the (three) forms of analysis.
