You can also choose to write research notes which require significant theoretical contributions to a topic:  Research papers - based on empirical work and grounded in theory. Note: Your semester paper should target a topic with a manageable scope given the limit of 3,500 words. For example, a topic such as “Supply Chain Collaboration” would be too broad and thus unsuitable for your semester paper. However, a topic such as “The Impact of Supply Chain Collaboration on Supply Chain Performance” would be more appropriate for your paper.  Research notes - academic comments on topical issues, contributing to the theoretical debate but lacking empirical research results. Note: If you aim to propose a new conceptual framework based on a comprehensive literature review on a certain topic, the type of your semester paper could be classified as research notes. While a literature review or research notes can be a conceptual paper in nature which is based on secondary data via desk research, case studies usually involve use of some primary data on a single, dual or multiple case companies. In another word, for case studies, primary data on one or more case companies may be used in your paper. Therefore, if you choose to write a case-study paper, it is strongly suggested that before writing the semester paper, you discuss with the course coordinator about the suitability of the case you want to use for the topic you have chosen. The SCM:IJ website will also advise on article style, referencing and formatting issues. Except for case studies, which are considered on an individual basis, a semester paper must not exceed 3,500 words (excluding tables and min 10 references). Sample papers you can refer to from SCM:IJ will be provided. You can also read on the website articles of interest to help in your own writing. Writing for an academic readership is very different from other styles targeted for public consumption.
