TRY A TRIATHLON
I have been doing triathlons for a number of years and when I begin to explain how to do one, most people question how could a person swim, bike and run all in one event. It’s easy, just take each sport, one at a time, and get ready to have fun!
For the mature person, triathlons may seem almost insurmountable, but they are not. With the rise in popularity of the sprint distance race, I have seen more and more people join the ranks and become triathletes themselves.
Let’s look at the sprint distance race: it involves swimming 1/4 of a mile, then biking 10 miles and, finally, running 3.1 miles, or a 5K. Impossible, you say? No, just break down each section and train accordingly. If you are looking for something more challenging than your trusty 5 K, then maybe you are ready to begin training for and competing in triathlons.
Let’s overcome some obstacles first. Let’s say that at present, you don’t have access to a pool to practice swimming, so let’s put that problem aside and address it a bit later.
