Companies that hire technical writers want someone who, first and foremost, know their subject matter. If you want to be a software technical writer, you better know about operating systems, computer interfaces, SDLCs, etc. If you have an interest in writing for science or engineering firms, you better know that subject well. In short, subject matter expertise is more important than education, but a degree in the discipline you want to write about certainly gives you an edge. I hope that helps
