What is important is the maintenance, the regular updates on the plugins, the usage of safe plugins and monitoring the site with various tools. If somebody is promising you 100% hacker safe website, they are lying. You also need to have safe, possibly automatized backup in place in order to avoid any issues if anything like this happens. Is your site on shared or dedicated hosting? Also I suspect that your website has a backdoor also known as a shell which has access to all your database, directories and files! Also the way the hacker is sending is by setting up a mailer script which uses the server smtp protocol to send spam message! You need a permanent fix to this issue because it can get you domain blacklist and affect its seo rating and pagerank !
