In 1915, Anzac troops (the Army Corps of Australia and New Zealand) traveled by ship to Egypt, where they received military training prior to their invasion of Gallipoli. This discussion assignment asks you to read the letters of two Anzac soldiers, Bert and Percy Smythe (to find these letters click the link above entitled: Anzac Soldiers' Letters from Egypt). These letters, as well as other documents posted on Blackboard, will serve as the basis of your historical analysis of the film, Gallipoli. It is recommended that you complete this discussion assignment before going on to write the short paper assignment. 1) What were the brothers' attitudes towards the Egyptians? 2) What do the letters tell you about their views on the intelligence, morality, and hygiene and sanitation practices of their Egyptian hosts? 3) To what degree is racial prejudice reflected in their letters? 4) Finally, what do you think accounts for Bert and Percy's perceptions of the Egyptians? Pay close attention to the photographs that accompany the letters, as similar images of the Anzac troops in Egypt are presented in the film. Be sure to address the questions completely.
