Course Details: - BIOC3000 Structural & Synthetic Biology: Course Description: The understanding of molecular structure & function is of central importance to students undertaking a major in the biological or chemical fields. Some content and assignments are based on current literature describing recent DNA & protein structures & how structure can inform about function. Laboratory work will emphasize the techniques required to analyse biomolecules in the context of a student-driven synthetic biology project. Course Introduction BIOC3000 will develop the understanding of biochemistry and molecular biology initiated in BIOC2000 and CHEM2052. Fundamental concepts of macromolecular structure and function, biochemical energy transduction, information transfer, systems integration and molecular evolution will be covered in the context of several big questions at the frontiers of research today. Parallel themes in each module will cover the structure and function of major biological molecules and fundamental biochemical functions common to all kingdoms of life. Examples relevant to human medicine will be included but the focus is broader than on simply human or mammalian biochemistry. Two extended practicals focussed on synthetic and structural biology will enable students to integrate and synthesise their prior learning and learn about current research techniques and what they can and cannot reveal. Effective communication of scientific results will be explored in contact sessions mentored by research staff. - BIOM3014 Molecular & Cellular Physiology : Course Description: Students will examine core systems in molecular & cellular physiology & develop an understanding of how they maintain homestasis & how the failure of these systems translate into disease. Course Introduction The biomedical discipline of physiology focuses on the maintenance of an “internal environment” (homeostasis), conducive to the survival of the organism. Students will examine core systems in molecular and cellular physiology and develop an understanding of how they maintain homeostasis and how the failure of these systems translates into disease. BIOM3014 builds on the cell and systems physiology that you learnt in BIOM2011 and BIOM2012. This course will consist of 3 lectures per week and will be divided into a number of modules. These modules will focus on topics such as receptors and their associated signalling pathways (GPCRs, RTKs, taste and olfactory), intracellular signalling and trafficking processes. Cellular responses to both external and internal environment will also be discussed, as well as the molecular basis for cell secretion. The relationship between the cellular processes studied in this course and human health and disease will be discussed. There will also be presentations from invited lecturers on cutting-edge research in their fields and you will be required to give a presentation based on these topics. A practical component over 5 weeks will provide you with skills and insights into the key experimental concepts of cell and molecular physiology - including the ability to introduce normal and mutated genes into cells, to determine their expression, report on cell signalling systems and responses and understand the link between genotype and protein function and how this determines phenotype in organisms. - MICR3002 Virology Course Description: Viruses have been shown to infect all forms of life and this course provides the fundamental background for studying the way in which viruses interact with their hosts. Surprisingly, these interactions may be beneficial as well as deleterious. The course will cover both sides of this dynamic interplay including virus disease in humans, animals, insects, and plants as well as molecular aspects of the nature of viruses, their evolution, replication, applications in genetic engineering and gene therapy, detection and control by both vaccines and antiviral strategies. The course will familiarize students with practical skills relevant to the isolation, purification and characterization of viral genetic material and viral proteins. These include techniques for virus detection, study of viral genes and expressed proteins, and computational analysis of global changes in the expression of host genes induced by viral infections. Course Introduction Viruses are important pathogens of all forms of life. This course provides the fundamental background for studying virus infections and diseases in humans, animals, insects, and plants and covers molecular aspects of the nature of viruses, their replication and applications in genetic engineering and gene therapy. The course also covers details of host responses to virus infection at the whole organism/tissue and single cell levels as well as virus detection and control by both vaccines and antiviral strategies. The subject also seeks to familiarize students with practical skills relevant to the characterization of viruses with a very hands-on practical components. These include molecular aspects of the detection, purification and isolation of viral genetic material, and study of viral genes and expressed proteins. An additional practical component will be dedicated to computational analysis of global changes in the expression of host genes induced by viral infections.
