Hello, I have a web based reportimg software. I'm connecting to sql server and get data what i need in sql querry. But for this, the SQL server has to be opened internet and authorized by the firewall. I'd like to do it via a port and service. I need a windows service to get data directly through a port without opening the sql server to the outside. With an exe the sql database will be installed on the server and will send back the information I requested from sql. the data can be in xml or json format. I need a windows service to pull data directly through a port without opening the sql server to the outside. The data acquisition speed must be at least as fast as remote data acquisition with management studio As a summary, get data from remote sql server to my application as xml or json file.

Hello, This should be an easy task that can be made using WCF or OData. The OData is nice because it maps directly the database queries and converts the results to XML however it is slow for big amount of records. I suggest WCF and the exposed web methods using JSON and REST. To be able to give you my final proposal I really need to check the amount of web methods to implement and the complexity of the the table relations. If you are interested I am available to discuss. Hi, I like to propose to use Web Service instead of Windows Service. It is same but the difference is no need to open port. Your reporting tool will just send an HTTP request and will response back with json or xml. Let me know what you think or questions. Regards, Daniel Fabia

Good Day! I have a lot of experience in creating of C based programs and system administration and I can help you to with your project. But, I want to ask you several question about it: If I understand you correctly, for a security reason you don`t want to open SQL server port to Internet. Instead you want c# based application that will be installed like windows service that will connect to MS SQL server, do some query and send result throw Internet to you. Is it correct? If so, how do you want to receive data? FTP, e-mail, TCP\IP client server based communication?... When service should send data? By request via Internet, by timer, etc….? How do you prefer to make query? Static query in source code, query from file, …? Thank you. And hope for future cooperation.
