I have any number of 1 to 9 boxes (length, width, height) and look for the smallest one box to put these in together for shipment. It is an optimisation problem. I need an algorithm that can be implemented as formula in e.g. excel.

Hi! I have extensive background in Math and Engineering (MSc), I propose that the problem can be solved using any compiled language (C++ for example) where you can input the number of boxes to be arranged and it prints out in any format the disposition of the boxes. Contact me for more details!.

When you say you want the smallest box , it is because you want to place a box inside another to the largest , or want to arrange them in a row from the smallest to the largest ?

I'm 3rd year math student and I did similar kind of problems before. Also I have some experience with Excel. Just two important questions, can these boxes be rotated on any side? Do you need one universal formula for any number of boxes (1 to 9) or can it be 9 formulas?
